Storage Conditions

What are generally recognized temperature and humidity conditions for storage for flexible barrier materials?

Most packaging suppliers provide guidance on the storage conditions for their packaging. The intention is to provide information on environmental conditions (and possibly a timeframe, such as 1-year from date of manufacture) that may affect performance expectations of the packaging. Some recommendations reflect Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). A supplier may also provide additional environmental conditions for material staging, a “Best Used” scenario. The information is not intended to be limiting or to be construed as measures to preserve the product contained in the packaging. Moreover, every product in all its packaging (primary, secondary, tertiary) through distribution should be evaluated.

There are no generally recognized standards for storage conditions. Recommendations vary due to the range of applications and environmental conditions (i.e. sterilization method, NiOx gas exposure by propane-fueled forklifts, UV exposure, etc.) Contact your material supplier for support in this area.

Some common recommendations are:

• Material should be stored at a range of 50-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Material should be stored at a range of 40-60% relative humidity.
• Material should be stored in a clean environment free from excessive dust, debris or other contaminants.
• Material should be wrapped in a protective coating (i.e. shrink wrap) and re-wrapped during storage. Note: Special wrapping material may be required for hygroscopic materials (i.e. EVOH, nylon, etc.)
• Material should be brought into an environment with the temperature and relative humidity requirements mentioned above, 24-48 hours before use
